An Update on the 2009 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

Although tennis fans have probably been glued to their television sets recently, whether you are not a major fan and are just interested in knowing how Wimbledon is progressing, or you are a fan but you have simply been too busy to stay up to date with what is happening, here is an update on the latest occurences at this year’s Wimbledon:

In the Ladies’ Singles quarterfinals, here are the results from the matches that took place on Day 8, which was June 30th:

Dinara Safina defeated Sabine Lisicki, with a score of 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1

Serena Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka, with a score of 6-2, 6-3

Venus Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwanska, with a score of 6-1, 6-2

Elena Dementieva defeated Francesca Schiavone, with a score of 6-2, 6-2

As tennis fans probably remember quite vividly, last year it was the Williams sisters who met each other in the finals of this same tournament. Thanks to their victories in the quarterfinals, they are moving in the right direction for the two of them to meet in the finals once again. This is because Venus Williams will be playing Dinara Safina in the semifinals, while Serena Williams will be playing Elena Dementieva in her semifinal match. Although most tennis experts are putting their money on seeing the Williams sisters in a rematch of last year’s final, if the two of them did happen to be upset by their opponents in the semifinals, it would mean that first ever all-Russian match in the Wimbledon final.
